Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. It is often referred to as ‘Meso’, which is purely just an abbreviation of the name.
Mesothelioma comes from the cells that are affected within this cancer. The mesothelial cells cover the outside of the body’s internal organs, for example, they can be found on the heart or on the lungs.
Why Claim for Mesothelioma?
There is no cure for this type of cancer and patients who are diagnosed with Mesothelioma are sadly only given a short time to live. It is considered to be a terminal illness yet surgery and chemotherapy may be carried out.
Types of Mesothelioma:
- Pleural Mesothelioma – This is the most common type that is caused by inhaling the fibres of asbestos into the lungs. Breathing may be difficult for a person as a tumour forms on the lining of the lungs.
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma – This is less common and is still caused by asbestos. It is where a tumour develops on the lining of the stomach that prevents it from working correctly.
People working in the following industry sectors are most at risk of being diagnosed with Mesothelioma:
- Weaving Mills
- Coal Mines
- Road Building
- Motor Vehicles
- Telephone Engineers
