TV worker died after roof plunge

15/08/2011

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that a satellite TV installation firm failed to ensure work at height was properly planned, organised and monitored after a worker died in a fall.

Foxtel Ltd, which is no longer trading, was prosecuted at the Old Bailey following the death of engineer Noel Corbin on February 3, 2008 at Belsize Park, London.

Mr Corbin, from New Addington, Croydon, suffered fatal head injuries after plunging more than 13 metres from a four-storey house on to a side patio at a house.

A subsequent HSE probe found that Mr Corbin, who was carrying out work on a satellite TV dish on the property's roof apex, had got on to the roof via a dormer window. He was also spotted working on another satellite dish on a flat roof, and is thought to have fallen from either the flat or sloping roof.

Foxtel, based in Wates Way, Brentwood, Essex, was handed a fine of £1 after it was shown to have no assets. Company bosses pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
