Trio fined over barn roof fall

15/07/2010

Fines amounting to £5,000 have been handed down to three men who pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches after a worker fell 8m through a barn roof in Sale.

Adrian Evens, Andrew Oliver and John Long all admitted breaching safety laws after a fourth man, David Pass, suffered serious injuries during the fall on Fairy Lane in June 2007.

Trafford Magistrates' Court heard how Mr Pass, 28, from Droylsden, suffered serious injuries to his head and back, leaving him in a coma for several days from which he emerged partially blind, after falling through the barn roof as he worked to remove corrugated panels.

The court also heard how Mr Pass had been forced to balance on the steel frame of the building due to scaffolding not being erected.

Mr Evens, 35, of York Road in Droylsden, who was subcontracted by Mr Oliver to carry out the work for barn owner and project manager John Long, was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 towards the cost of the prosecution.

Mr Long, 62, of Fairy Lane in Sale, was fined £1,000 with costs of £1,500. Mr Oliver, 43, of Juniper Crescent in Droylsden, was also fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,000 towards the prosecution, which was brought about by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
