Protesters receive compensation

Compensation has been awarded to two men allegedly beaten by police during protests outside the Israeli Embassy in January last year.
Scotland Yard confirmed twin brothers Ashley and Russell Inglis have been awarded compensation of £12,500 each.
The brothers' lawyers said they were the victim of unprovoked assaults by police offers during the protests on January 3 against Israeli operations in Gaza. It comes just before appeals are heard against the sentences handed to a number of protesters convicted of violent disorder in the same demonstrations.
Ashley and Russell Inglis say police officers struck them on the head with batons at the demonstration.
A total of 55 police officers were injured on the day, while £100,000 worth of damage was caused to property from late December 2008 to late January 2009 during a series of protests, the Yard spokesman said. Some 76 people were charged in connection with the demonstrations.
Ten protesters will appeal against their sentences on Tuesday. Their cases will be heard by three judges at the Court of Appeal in London.
