Play park glass path to be removed
20/05/2010
A path made from crushed glass in a children's park in Sunderland is to be removed, the city council has said.
Parents say the park is a death trap and have complained that shards of the glass have led to lacerated hands.
Diamond Hall Pocket Park will now be closed until the "decorative surface" is taken away.
Members of the public have heavily criticised the so-called minimalist park for what they say is a lack of facilities. Parents say the park has concrete "play features" instead of the usual climbing frames and swings.
The city council, which is spending £70,000 on the park, said the glass path will be taken away and the park will be shut until the work is completed.
"The city council is working with the landscape designers, the main contractor and their specialist sub contractor, who laid the surface, to resolve the recent problem," said Julie Gray, who runs the city's community services.
"Contractors are due on site to remove the decorative surface which will be replaced as soon as possible. Health and safety at all our parks and play areas is of paramount concern and all reports of public concern are taken seriously.
"We hope that once it is completed Millfield Pocket Park will become another valuable community asset successfully provided through the Play Pathfinder project."
