Pitts win privacy case against NoW

22/07/2010

The News of the World has paid undisclosed damages to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie after it printed claims the Hollywood couple were splitting up.

It comes after a front page story in the newspaper in January alleged the pair were separating with the claims also appearing on its website.

The couple brought an action for misuse of private information and breach of the 1998 Data Protection Act over the story headlined 'Pitts all over'.

Solicitor for the superstar pair, who were not present at London's High Court, Keith Schilling told Mr Justice Eady News Group Newspapers accepted the allegations were "false and intrusive".

Mr Schilling said the newspaper, whose case was that it acted in good faith, had agreed to publish an apology and pay the couple their costs and damages, which they intended to donate to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Afterwards, Mr Schilling said the publication had "spawned an array of false stories" all over the world.

"In consequence, when the News of the World failed to publicly retract the allegations and apologise for them - thereby leaving their readers in the dark as to the true position - the couple felt they had no alternative than to sue.

"The victory marks the end of the litigation brought by Brad and Angelina."
