Fine for security guard death firm
09/06/2010
Security firm bosses have been fined £7,000 after an employee died at a construction site flat when he was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.
Alpha Group Security Ltd admitted breaching Section 2(1), 2 and 33 (a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 in connection with the death of security guard Thomas Fraser, who was killed by the gas at Ann Street, Burnbank, Hamilton, on February 6, 2008.
Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Mr Fraser, 37, was based in a flat which had a portable power generator, but he had not been shown how to use it. It was also operated without proper ventilation.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Adrian Tinson said: "Responsible management of risk should have ensured the safe set-up and use of the portable petrol generator in a well-ventilated area which could have avoided this unnecessary death."
Clyde Valley Housing Association Ltd, which subcontracted Alpha Group Security Ltd to work at the site, was fined £70,000 in March after pleading guilty to a charge under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety etc Act 1974.
