Factory worker paid compensation

21/05/2010

A man who broke his wrist while working at a medical supplies factory in south Wales has been given £20,000 in compensation.

Brent Songhurst was working for Biomet, a manufacturer of tools for medicine, when he slipped on some dust and fell. He broke his wrist and had to take half of the following year off work.

The dust was created by shot blasting machinery in the factory and lawyers argued it should have been cleared up to prevent such accidents.

Mr Songhurst, 59, from Bridgend, had been carrying a barrel of acid outside the blasting room before he slipped, highlighting the potential danger of the incident.

As well as the broken wrist, Mr Songhurst suffered "severe shoulder pain" in the fall and had to have surgery. He is now back at work.

He said: "I know my injury could easily have been avoided had more care been taken to ensure the floor was kept clean."
