Carillion fined over horror crash

Construction giant Carillion has been fined £185,000 after one of its workers was run over by a reversing truck, leaving him with a catalogue of life-threatening injuries.
Michael Gresty, from Chadderton, was involved in the construction of a new track around a pond at the Kingsway Business Park in Rochdale on November 11, 2008, when a Ford Transit truck reversed over him.
Mr Gresty, who is still unable to return to work following the incident, suffered a host of injuries including: a fractured spine; broken shoulder, foot and ribs; and a dislocated hip, which left the 56-year-old in hospital for four weeks.
The firm pleaded guilty to three health and safety offences at Manchester Crown Court after the prosecution was brought about by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which criticised Carillion's failure to implement reasonable risk assessments.
HSE inspector Neil Martin said: "It is not acceptable that a construction company, which employs 50,000 people around the world, did not carry out the right risk assessment or put a system in place for preventing collisions."
