Bosses fined over fire at hotel

Hotel bosses in Leicester have been ordered to pay more than £40,000 in fines and costs after admitting breaking fire safety regulations during a blaze last year.
Firefighters were called to the Park Hotel in the city's London Road after a blaze broke out on the first floor on August 13. The subsequent safety probe showed residents had left the hotel themselves after no formal evacuation was initiated by staff.
Other regulation breaches uncovered by fire safety inspectors included no fire alarm sounder in the basement and most first-floor fire doors leading to the stairs and corridors being wedged open. The fire risk assessment was also deemed to be inadequate.
Owner Park Hotel Ltd and general manager Ashwin Ratan pleaded guilty at Leicester Magistrates Court to 10 offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said the company was handed a fine of £29,715 with £8,000 costs while Mr Ratan faces a fine of £2,985 and costs of £380.
